Venice to Ferrara
We left Venice via a couple of ferry hops, firstly on a public ferry to Pellestrina, a peaceful island of fishing villages.

We cycled the 11km length of the island and then hopped on a private boat to Chioggia on the mainland, past the controversial flood defences designed to protect Venice.

We had cappuccinos in Chioggia then negotiated our way through the packed market which had delicious looking food everywhere.

We had a break for lunch at a restaurant in the middle of nowhere and could have had 3 courses with wine. There were still 35 miles left to cycle so Katie and I stuck to just one course but I was still reliving ragu for quite a few miles.

It is so lovely having Katie with me, especially for the post ride wander around the tourist sights. Ferrara is a beautiful medieval city with a spectacular castle right next to the hotel.

The group dinner was a classic Italian four course carbfest which completely defeated me - pasta twice in one day is too much even after 71 miles of cycling!

We then essentially spent the rest of the ride biking by the side of the River Po, completely flat and very similar to Fenland riding at home ie bum numbing into a head wind!

Our mission when we got to Ferrara was gelato obviously, a perfect reward for Katie’s 1st day of cycling and my 22nd!
