Ravenna to San Marino
The first big event today was crossing the Rubicon but fortunately we didn’t then face Pompey’s army, just a photo opportunity with Caesar.
The ride itself was completely flat and bum numbing for 37 miles and then very rudely went upwards.

The climb hit 18% for one extremely rude section and I don’t think Katie has ever heard her mother swear so much. She did really well on her 1st big climb so will hopefully survive the Appenines without too much complaining!

We had a guided walking tour of the city before dinner, I knew nothing about San Marino and the guide was great, telling us all about the origins of the world’s smallest republic and how it now operates. Freedom, independence and new presidents elected every 6 months sounds ideal, although there does appear to be a bit of a dodgy connection to Russia!

Dinner was in a restaurant overlooking the incredible view across to the Adriatic, with fast service and delicious food. It was worth the horrible climb to get up here :)

Lunch was at the top of the 1st hill and I’ve learned my lesson re volume of lunch followed by a huge climb, just the one slice of pizza this time!
The climb was up to San Marino and it loomed over us looking very high up.

Humans and cycle kit washed, brief snooze then time for the obligatory gelato walk.
