Troyes to Semur-en-Auxois

Another day, another 81 miles. My legs were lulled into a false sense of relaxation on the rest day yesterday and were not entirely thrilled to be forced into action again. It was a hilly and hot ride, especially towards the end, but again picturesque, quiet roads make cycling delightful.

I’m looking a bit hot and bothered in this photo with Don and Craig about to zoom past me!

Today’s picnic lunch was at Fontenay Abbey, founded in 1118, the world’s oldest Cistercian site and more importantly, there was tarte au citron.

It was getting very hot after lunch and the route was designed to take us up a steep climb to the Vercingetorix monument (he was the leader of the Gauls defeated by Caesar). I spotted a short cut on my Garmin so with apologies to ancient history, I gave it a cheeky miss. Richie the guide took this photo of the statue and two monks who bizarrely were doing running hill reps, one of them is not enjoying the experience!

Meanwhile I was happily pootling along the Canal de Bourgogne on another gorgeous bike path.

I hadn’t entirely escaped the hills and I puffed my way up a particularly nasty climb, thinking about all of the climbing still to come on this trip. To add insult to the moaning bottom, the entry into Semur-en-Auxois was on evil cobbles but it is a beautiful medieval town.

The hotel is just outside the town and the rooms weren’t ready when we arrived, forcing me to have a delicious, cold beer - the best part of a hot day’s ride!
