San Marino to Bagno di Romagna
We left San Marino by descending the enormous hill that we climbed yesterday, the 18% gradient was not pleasant either way. After that rude awakening we undulated westwards with enough climbing to make the quadriceps have a proper whinge.

Coffee stop was in a beautiful square in Sarsina with a rather disturbing statue of Plautus, a famous Roman poet who liked a smartypants saying eg ‘ This is the great fault of wine; it first trips up the feet: it is a cunning wrestler.’
More excitingly, there were custard filled doughnuts with the morning cappuccino. After a bit more undulating and attempting to ride through a street market before being told off by a policeman, we arrived at the hotel too early for check in. This obviously meant beer, panini and a gelato..
I think the past month of cycling may be catching up with me - my afternoon nap was a two hour conk out. The plan had been to sit by the hotel’s rooftop pool but the storm arrived so the comfy bed won.
The monster in the middle had to be climbed by 10.30am to avoid the 11000 cyclists doing the Gran Fondo Nove Colli in the opposite direction. There were still numerous Italian Sunday cyclists everywhere, all dressed immaculately of course and lots of ‘ciao’ greeetings.
The scenery was beautiful rolling hills and it was really hot but we could see a storm brewing.

I’m very glad we weren’t cycling in this…
