Montreux to Sierre

Today felt like a holiday! Although we travelled further into the Alps, it was along a valley beside the Rhone river, the Val d’Anniviers, so a lovely flat ride.

We left Montreux on a bike path along the lake. The weather forecast was originally for rain and storms but the weather gods are staying with us and a light drizzle as we left was the wettest it got.

As cyclists, obviously we had to stop at the UCI headquarters with a velodrome, MTB track and bike exhibition - geek and proud!

The ride continued along a lovely bike path through a fertile valley of vineyards and more apples than I have ever seen. The cloud formations made the surrounding mountains look even more dramatic.

As we approached Sierre, it became more industrial and the town itself isn’t exactly typically Swiss chocolate box.

My post bike wander was to Chateau Mercier that I could see from the hotel. It involved a climb up a lot of steps which was not well received by the legs, but it was worth the effort. It was built in 1908 by a very wealthy family who visited a range of castles and chose the bits they liked, as one does.

I spent the rest of the afternoon drinking beer and nattering rather than napping, this is hopefully not an error given the mountain pass to be climbed tomorrow…ho hum
