Ferrara to Ravenna

Today’s ride was a zoom through the Po Delta in lovely sunshine, similar to yesterday but the wind was behind us, woohoo!

Lunch was a highlight of the day in an agriturismo with homemade bread, salad, risotto and ravioli made by a 93 year old Nonna.

Fortunately after that feast, we only had to pedal for 12 more flat miles below sea level via a little ferry across the river (more mozzie bites).

We arrived in Ravenna in the early afternoon, had a quick shower and headed out to do the tourist trail, after a gelato of course.

Ravenna is known for its 5th century mosaics and visiting them requires buying a timed ticket for 5 venues even if you don’t want to go to all five, showing your vaccine pass to get a green sticker, then joining queues to have everything checked again. But it was definitely worth the bizarre bureaucracy…

Mosaics are a big thing in Ravenna, Katie says my BBQ would look inadequate here but I did like these mosaic traffic signs.

We also visited Dante’s tomb where his bones may or may not be buried, Ravenna definitely stakes a claim on the ‘father of the Italian language’.

After all that touristing, I needed a cold beer and we were treated to a side show of a demonstration against a right wing political rally, lots of entertaining shouting and gesticulating.
Dinner was in a beautiful restaurant with more tributes to Dante on the walls and yet more pasta, never knowingly under pastafied this week!
